International Yoga Day, also known as World Yoga Day, is observed on June 21st every year. It is a global event celebrated to promote the practice of Yoga and raise awareness about its numerous benefits. The theme of International Yoga Day 2023 is ‘HUMANITY’.
The proposal on the idea of commemorating a special day known as Yoga Day was put forth by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, on September 27, 2014. In his statement, he emphasises the timeless value of yoga, recognising it as a priceless contribution to our ancestral heritage. Yoga offers numerous health benefits, to name a few:
- It enhances strength and flexibility
- It cultivates mindfulness
- Yoga also enriches concentration.
- It is to be highlighted that Yoga extends beyond mere physical exertion
- It serves as a pathway to inner unity with oneself and the global community and the natural world.
As BKS IYENGAR has rightly said, “Yoga is a light which once lit, will never dim. The
better you practise, the brighter your flame”.
